" Copper Canyon is what
Grand Canyon will be when it grows up!" and my, my, is this
true..."
Two wonderful nights at
Divisidero. Heavy farmhouse meals, and you will need this kind of
food with all the walking, trekking, bird watching and
horse riding down
into the Canyon you may undertake. Onto our next stop (our very
own secret new discovery... such a secret that you must ask us
to let you have details!)...
We flew back to Mexico City from Los Mochis
5 days are needed to undertake this journey comfortably. See below
all the things I have to tell you about Copper Canyon..
The Train... El Chepe
Met by Rodolfo, 30 years working on this train with his broad Chihuahuan
smile! You just know you are in good hands!
Gone are the old wooden seats... but the luggage car still remains.
Years ago, when I first travelled on this train, I met a grandson
of Pancho Villa! Reputed to have married 54 times! He was eventually
shot returning from a christening! The car he was driving at the
time can be seen at the museum (his old villa).
You travel through cattle country, seeing hardworking farmers with
great riding skills, Menonites, 9000 of them came pre- Second World
War from Canada... this could be the backdrop to any "cowboy" movie.
The difference however between a movie set and reality is that the
Indian is revered here! Treasured and respected, there are about
50,000 dotted around the Canyon! This Taumaura is so gentle even
though he was linked in the days of "no borders" to his
fiercer cousin the Navajo! You really must ask us for all the information
on this area so that you do not miss anything!!!!!
For example, we can arrange very special riding tours into the base
of the canyon and personally choose the horse for you from a stallion
to a "plodder". Click
here to know more about horse riding.
Please come and visit
this wonderful place, I promise you when you stand at the station
on the side of a mountain as the train comes plundering towards you
it is like turning the clock back to pioneering days... I defy the
hairs on your neck not to stiffen!"
