We are very proud to be the UK office for the Expreso Maya. I have waited so long to see this project begin and finally it has, with the wonderful Jose Luis at the controls! I feel I can quietly call this "My Train"...

So here we are, myself and Joanne, full of excitement and ready to board the train. We flew to Campeche and stayed at the Uayamon Hacienda which was awesome! It is so different from the other Haciendas, almost ethereal... magical grounds, an old hospital, a chapel built in 1902 (what this
Hacienda must have seen and how many ghosts are here!), horses, including a stallion, a bird watcher's paradise. The little village is within walking distance, with its own station. It could be a backdrop for a John Wayne movie!

A sample itinerary...

Arrival: Villahermosa (obviously we would have made all your arrangements to get here and also combined other itineraries)

Day one: Breakfast, then tour of Palenque Ruins.

Day two: Palenque

Day Three: Early start! Board Expreso Maya 6am.

Fabulous Mexican breakfast then just sit back and enjoy the luxury of this train...Train then arrives in Campeche. You, the client, have the choice of getting off at Uayamon (see my reference about this old train station), you are met and transferred to the Hacienda; or you can continue to Campeche and stay in the town.

Day Four: Spend an extra night in this beautiful area with a visit to the ruins of Edzná, there is also a Son y Lumière show.

Day Five: Board the train at 6.30 am, another wonderful Mexican breakfast on board, and we continue our way towards Uxmal. A visit to this wonderful archaeological zone. Re-board the train where your luncheon awaits you. Then a slow meandering journey to Merida.

We now know so many "secrets" still unknown to the regular tourist (please do ask us referencing this route). You can, if you continue, end up in Chetumal... to cross the border into Belize and Guatemala. We can design these itineraries for you.

Campeche...

For me, it is Merida 25 years ago! Pretty houses, small streets, markets and the hustle and bustle of Yucatecan life. A promenade to be proud of and seafood second to none. Many fresh oyster stands, although I doubt we could persuade our client to try them! It is a pity because they are sensational!

We board the train at Campeche but remember the train has travelled from Palenque down to Campeche, stopping at that wonderful little station 5 minutes from the Hacienda!

6.30 AM, we set off... excellent Mexican breakfast... we pass through the little villages, people waive, we see old forgotten Haciendas; because, remember, where there is a railway track there are old Mexican dwellings. This is where the hemp was produced, which was then a thriving business. The train was needed to transport the hemp to the cities.

Imagine, I have worked with Mexico for so long but I am still taken by surprise and left without words at the incredible sights and sounds I encounter... and where better to encounter them than on this train.

We rumble along until we get to Uxmal, we are met and taken to the site. Of course I have seen this magical place many times but I am never sorry to visit again! Everything on the train is handled with such style and panache! I am so proud! And so incredibly happy to be here!

We are taking the Puuc route... let me explain..

This route incapsulates Uxmal, Kabah and Sayil. Sayil was an old palace with 90 rooms. It is even possible here to see evidence of Temazcal

Copper Canyon Train, El Chepe
