Casa del Balam |

Gateway to the Mayan sites and the Haciendas, but also with its
own charm and culture.
There are plenty of things to do here with lovely music filled
evenings and great restaurants. Many tour companies fail to mention
the incredible Baroque Mansions and wide avenues of this, one of
my favourite cities.
Please believe me when I say that some of the best food in Mexico
is found in this city. We can pre-book restaurants for you.
The Grand Baroque homes on the Avenida Montejo contain sumptuous
furnishings which include Italian marble (all from the rich profits
of the henequen trade).
A city of culture... with an event every evening.

Saturday is "Fiesta Mexicana" night in Calle Montejo.

The Spaniards entered this city in 1517, travelling from Cuba.
They encountered less resistance here from the Maya than at other
ports along the Yucatan Coast. It was here that the mixing of
cultures began and, unfortunately, also the slavery of the Maya
by the conquering Spaniards.
Campeche is the gateway to the magical Puuc route. The Maya
and the Toltec hunted these lands and also fished these waters.
Chac the Rain God was worshipped. Then came the pirates (Francis
Drake is not a good name to mention in these parts!) and even
a bloodthirsty and fearless pirate called Mary Steen and of course
Morgan!
Travel from here to Uayamon, onto Edzná, Sian Ka'an and
Bacalar... so much to do in this area. There are so many "secret" places,
so please ask us to design your itinerary.
We are, at present, in the process of setting up some amazing
tours to the old “palaces” of Campeche. Call us for
details…
